Samsung unveils Galaxy Tab 4 Education for US schools

Schools in the US are running scalable 1:1 computing initiatives and Samsung created a tablet just for them. It’s based on the Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 but adds Google for Education support and a rugged chassis. The tablet is aimed at K-12 schools and the tougher exterior will be needed, especially in the lower grades.

Google offers a web console (asking $30 per device) that allows school IT personnel to quickly set up a large number of tablets.

The specs of the Galaxy Tab 4 Education include a 10.1″ WXGA screen (1,280) covered with Gorilla Glass, a quad-core processor at 1.2GHz, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, 16GB of built-in storage plus a microSD card slot. It will run Android 4.4 KitKat with TouchWiz on top.

Samsung’s trademark Multi-window is supported, so kids can view reference material while simultaneously taking notes. USB keyboards and AllShare Cast hub for wireless screen mirroring are optional accessories.

Unfortunately, Samsung didn’t reveal if the Tab 4 Education has any IP or MIL-STD-G credentials to back up the rugged look.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Education is available right now at $370 (plus $30 for Google Education). Note that a regular Galaxy Tab 4 10.1 is available for $320.
