Samsung SM951 PCIe SSD achieves 2.15GB/s read speed, sips on power

Samsung unveiled today its new SM951 PCIe (M.2) SSD in a trio of different capacities – 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. The drive is not only quite small, but also freakishly fast with 2.15GB/s read and 1.55GB/s write speeds.

The SM951 uses a new 10-nanometer MLC flash technology, which makes it 50% less power hungry. In fact, the drive consumes just 2 miliwatts in standby mode. It also achieves 130,00 random read IOPS and 85,000 random write IOPS. Sadly, the endurance of the drive isn’t yet known, but its predecessor, the XP941, was rated at 73TB.

At first, only major laptop and desktop computer manufacturers will get their hands on the drive, but it’s quite likely that Samsung releases it for regular folks to buy later down the road. Pricing
