Rovio posts strong 2011 financial results, reportedly getting ready for IPO

Rovio, a mobile gaming company famous for its Angry Birds franchise, published its financial results for the year 2011 and the numbers are quite interesting. Rovio reports 648 million downloads and 200 million active monthly users.

Keep in mind that we’re talking 2011 here, so that’s just the original Angry Birds, Seasons and Rio. The latest franchise, Angry Birds Space, only launched recently though it quickly became a hit as well.

Anyway, back to the numbers. Rovio had revenue of €75.4 million ($106.3 million) for the whole year 2011 and earnings (before tax) of €48 million ($67.6 million). That’s a nice 64% profit margin.

Rovio’s revenue for 2010 is said to have been about $10 million, so that’s huge growth. Their staff grew exponentially too – they went from just 28 people to 224 in 2011.

It’s not just the games they make – about 30% of Rovio’s 2011 revenue came from licensing and merchandising (all those plush Angry Birds toys that you buy). The Finns recently opened an adventure park in their homeland and there’s reportedly an Angry Birds movie in the works.

Rovio is getting ready to make the move to a publicly traded company, according to Reuters. There aren’t much more details, but the company was reportedly valued at around €6.7 billion ($9 billion) in 2011.
