RIM Australia admits being behind the ‘Wake Up’ protest outside Apple Store

When the video of the ‘Wake Up’ protest outside the Australian Apple Store hit the Internet, it was generally assumed that Samsung would be behind this, considering their track record of taking jabs at Apple. But later when asked about this, the company denied being behind it.

A few days ago, Mactalk‘s James Croft went through the source code of the Wake Up page and found clues that pointed towards RIM’s Australian website. The date that the website was counting down to was also speculated as the approximate release date for the BlackBerry 10. And lastly, the blogger who just happened to be there to shoot the video of the protest outside the Apple Store has previously worked for RIM.

However, all this was still speculation until the point RIM came out and admitted to being behind the protest. Richelle Gillett, Account Director from Spectrum Communications for Blackberry said:

“We can confirm that the Australian ‘Wake Up’ campaign, which involves a series of experiential activities taking place across Sydney and Melbourne, was created by RIM Australia. A reveal will take place on May 7th that will aim to provoke conversation on what ‘being in business’ means to Australians.”

I find it ironic that it’s RIM that’s asking people to wake up, while it’s, by itself, is a company that is having a really hard time keeping people interested in its products. It would have made sense for Samsung to be behind this; at least they are good in making some iconic products just as Apple. RIM, on the other hand, is really struggling to come up with some meaningful products lately.

On an unrelated note, is amateur hour over yet?
