PowerVR Series6XE GPUs introduce OpenGL ES 3.0 to budget mobile devices

Imagination Technologies, the folks behind the popular PowerVR series of mobile graphics processors, have unveiled their latest family of GPUs dubbed the Series6XE.

The new Rogue family of GPUs will come with support for OpenGL ES 3.0 and OpenCL 1.x, and is set to become available across a wide range of entry-level and midrange mobile devices.

“What makes [Series6XE GPUs] unique is how they can efficiently enable tomorrow’s low-cost solutions by merely using a single or half-cluster design to provide the same or better performance to a competing dual- or quad-core solution.”

Imagination confirms that the new Series6XE family will offer great performance to a class of devices that have had to make sacrifices due to inferior SoCs or battery availability. The XE family is touted to bring the latest OpenGL ES 3.0 standard, which will be specifically optimized to deliver superior performance while keeping size and power requirements in check.

Look for the new GPUs to make entry-level smartphones that much better in 2014.
