Opera demonstrates upcoming ‘Ice’ browser for tablets

Opera is currently working on a brand new version of a mobile browser designed specifically for tablets. Currently known only as ‘Ice’, this new browser uses a gesture-based interface quite common on apps these days and is the first Opera browser to use the WebKit engine.

As you can see in the video below, ‘Ice’ allows you to save web pages on the homescreen for quick access. It then loads these sites as you’d load a native app. The fact that it uses the WebKit engine means that it works quite well with Google’s services, such as Google Maps.

You can use gestures such as swiping from the sides to move back and forward in history. There are no buttons in the browser UI and everything is done using gestures, other than the tiny home button at the bottom of the screen, which takes you back to the main screen.

The browser was shown working on an iPad but an Android version will be available as well. Opera is planning on releasing the browser on both platforms by February.
