Magic Lantern software tweak enables 24fps RAW video support on Canon EOS 5D Mark III

Just like its predecessor, the Canon EOS 5D Mark III is known for its quality video recording performance that rivals professional video cameras. Now, thanks to a little software tweak by Magic Lantern, the Mark III can not just rivals them, but even exceeds them.

Magic Lantern is a custom software for Canon DSLRs that runs alongside Canon’s firmware and adds additional features not present by default. In case of the Canon 5D Mark III, this firmware adds the ability to record RAW video in 24fps at 14-bit quality per frame.

The video is recorded in a custom .raw format, which can then be converted to a more commonly used format such as CinemaDNG. As you’d expect from RAW footage, the quality is leaps and bounds better than the default MJPEG output and said to be on par with the likes of Alexa and RED cameras. The important thing to note here is that the 5D Mark III is a full-frame camera, so you get a much wider field of view.

The software is still in development and hasn’t been released yet. It’s effects on the life of the camera are not yet known. With the amount of data that needs to be churned out while recording in RAW, the camera does run a bit warmer but other than that no other drawbacks have been found as of yet.

The software also works on the previous generation 5D Mark II and should soon be made available for other Canon cameras as well. For more details, check out the source link below.
