LinkedIn acquires Pulse news reader app for $90 million

Professional social networking website LinkedIn has announced that the company has acquired the popular mobile news reader app Pulse. The acquisition is said to have cost the company $90 million, according to AllThingsD.

The first question that might come to anyone’s mind is ‘Why?’. Why would a social network like LinkedIn need to invest in a news reader application. According to LinkedIn Senior Vice President Deep Nishar, LinkedIn believes it can be ‘the definitive professional publishing platform – where all professionals come to consume content and where publishers come to share their content.’ LinkedIn aims to provide additional information to its users in the form of news, Influencer posts, industry updates, discussions, comments and more, through the acquisition of Pulse.

As for the app itself, it is said to continue in its current form, so existing users don’t have to worry about the app being pulled or abandoned any time soon.
