New Office 2016 for Mac now available for purchase

Microsoft has released the final version of Office 2016 for Mac. The company had released a preview back in March but now you can purchase the full version from Microsoft.

Office 2016 for Mac is a complete revamp of the old Office 2011. The new app brings the new UI design seen on the Windows and mobile versions of Office while harmonizing with the new design and features of OS X. It supports features like fullscreen mode, multi-touch gestures, and also has Retina assets for all the high resolution Macs. Read more »

Apple launches free replacement program for 3TB hard drive in 27-inch iMacs

Apple has launched a replacement program for the 3TB hard drive used in 27-inch iMac systems that were sold between December 2012 and September 2013. The company said it has determined that the hard drive “may fail under certain conditions.”

The iPhone maker is in the process of contacting those who provided a valid email address during the registration of their device. Critical zero-day flaws in Apple’s iOS and OS X could allow hackers to steal passwords

Researchers have revealed some serious zero-day flaws in Apple’s iOS and OS X operating systems that when exploited could allow attackers to break into the company’s password-storing keychain, app sandboxes, as well as circumvent its App Store security checks, effectively letting them steal passwords from installed apps, including iCloud, Mail app, as well as Google Chrome.

“Our malicious apps successfully went through Apple’s vetting process and was published on Apple’s Mac app store and iOS app store,” said lead researcher Luyi Xing. Read more »

Apple iTunes to get a colourful makeover soon

Apple announced the iOS 9 and OS X El Capitan at the WWDC two weeks ago. Among the announced features, the iTunes makeover was surprisingly missed. Yet, the Apple Developer site carries the images of OS X El Capitan interface on MacBook with new iTunes app icon.

Not only that, even the iOS 9 developer pages has the placeholder image bearing revised Music app icon. Both iTunes app icon and the Music app icon get a colourful treatment, moving away from the single color app icon background used so far. Read more »

Google working on improving Chrome efficiency on Mac

If you used Chrome on Windows and then on Mac, you’d notice there is a sea of difference between the two. While it is arguably the best browser to use on Windows, on OS X it feels like a bloated mess that just burns through your battery at an astonishing rate for no good reason.

Apple confirmed that it is hard at work on building its own mapping database with street view. The Cupertino giant is currently relying on third-party data for Apple Maps.

Job listing suggests Apple planning to make Apple Maps available on other platforms as well

Apple is planning to make its mapping service – which is currently exclusive to iOS and OS X – available on all platforms via the Web, according to a job listing posted by the company last month.

First spotted by tech analyst Benedict Evans and titled Maps JavaScript Engineer, the listing seeks a web technology expert to help make maps work seamlessly on the web. “This role requires a deep knowledge of the JavaScript language, plus a solid understanding of the performance and compatibility issues that arise when delivering a cross-platform web solution,” its description said. Apple allegedly planning to switch to San Francisco as default font for iOS and OS X

Apple has been working on its new font – San Francisco – for a while now and we saw it debut on the Apple Watch announced last year. But soon you might be seeing it as the default font on iOS and OS X, replacing the current Helvetica Neue.

San Francisco is a heavier typeset designed to emphasise visibility, especially on smaller displays of the Apple Watch. The font also scales well to larger displays and works quite well on iOS and OS X. In comparison, many people find the current Helvetica Neue to be quite light and hard to read, especially on iOS. Next Apple iOS, OS X update to pack Spock’s Vulcan salute emoji

Leonard Nimoy, popularly known as Spock from the space fiction movie series Star Trek, passed away on February 27 and made the character Spock immortal. Even Apple is preparing to pay homage to Nimoy and Spock with a new Star Trek themed Spock emoji for OS X and iOS.
