Canon announces eleven new point-and-shoot cameras

After Sony, Panasonic and Nikon have had their go, I was starting to wonder when Canon was going to open its big bag of cameras and shower us with an unnecessarily large number of point-and-shooters. But it looks like I don’t have to wonder any more because Canon has just gone ahead and announced no less than eleven cameras.

Let’s start with the more interesting ones, that is the PowerShot ELPH 530 HS ($349.99; pictured above) and the ELPH 320 HS ($279.99). The main difference between the two is that the former has a 10.1 megapixel sensor and 12x optical zoom whereas the latter has a 16.1 megapixel sensor and 5x optical zoom. Both cameras, however, have a 3.2-inch touchscreen display and more importantly, Wi-Fi for sharing your images. You can transfer your images wirelessly to a computer, online services like Facebook, Flickr, YouTube or Canon’s iMAGE GATEWAY service (with 10GB of online storage space) or even to an iOS device using the companion app. Both cameras can also do 1080p24 video. The ELPH 530 HS will ship in April whereas the ELPH 320 HS will ship in March.

Next up are the two super-zoom cameras, the PowerShot SX260 HS ($349.99; pictured above) and the SX240 HS. Both have a 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, 20x optical zoom, 3-inch, 461k-dot display, ISO 3200 and 1080p24 video recording. The difference between the two is that the former also has GPS built-in. Both the cameras will ship in March.

Next is a rugged camera, the PowerShot D20 ($349.99). Other than the gaudy color and water/dust/shock/freeze-proofing typical of a rugged camera, the D20 also has a rather unique curve on the side, presumably for a better grip. It also has a 12 megapixel CMOS sensor, ISO 3200, 5x optical zoom, 3-inch, 461k-dot display and 1080p24 video recording. The D20 will ship in May.

Finally, we have a whole bunch of new A-series cameras, six of them, in fact. This includes the PowerShot A4000, A3400 IS, A2400 IS, A2300, A1300 and the A810. The A4000 ($199.99; pictured above) and the A3400 IS ($179.99) are the most expensive models. The A4000 has a 16 megapixel sensor, 8x optical zoom and a 3-inch display. The A3400 IS has the same sensor, 5x optical zoom but also adds a touchscreen display. Both the cameras will ship in March.

Going down the price ladder, we have the PowerShot A2400 IS ($159.99; pictured above) and the A2300 ($149.99). Both the cameras have a 16 megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom and a 2.7-inch LCD. As the name suggests, the A2400 IS will also have image stabilization, not available on the A2300. Both the cameras will ship in March.

Finally, we have the PowerShot A1300 ($119.99; pictured above) and the A810 ($109.99), which are the cheapest of the lot. Both have 16 megapixel sensors, 5x optical zoom, 2.7-inch display and use AA-batteries. The A1300 also has an optical viewfinder. Both the cameras will ship in April.
